Bishop Michael E. Putney, until 2013 Catholic Co-Chair of the international dialogue with the World Methodist Council died on 28th March, aged 67. After doctoral studies in Rome, he was a lecturer in the Brisbane Seminary for many years, and was appointed Bishop of Townsville, his home town, in northern Queensland, Australia, in 2001. He had been for many years a leading figure in the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, the Vatican’s ecumenical agency. He had been diagnosed with inoperable cancer in December 2012, and inspired many with the serene way in which he continued his ministry until the end. In his last week, his autobiography was launched. His notable contribution to the dialogue, and his often-declared love for the Methodist tradition, will be reported in a tribute in the next edition of First Friday Newsletter.
