“If one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” (1 Cor. 12: 36b)
In the economy of God, there is a story of Methodism that has inspired generations of missionaries, clergy and lay people to serve God around the world. Recently our partner church the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka celebrated the Bicentennial of its rich and diverse history from 1814 to 2014. The Methodist men and women played an important role in shaping Sri Lanka and spreading the Gospel throughout the country.
The President Rev. Dr. A. W. Jebanesan (pictured left) wrote: “Knowing this story is crucial to our identity as Methodists, we tried to uncover exciting and interesting stories of our ancestors through the study of Church history. Knowledge of our story helps provide meaning to the present, and the present determines the future”.
“If one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” (1 Cor. 12: 36b) The Uniting Church in Australia rejoices with the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka. At this moment of celebration we pray with the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka and recall the loving purpose of God in this world.
A prayer for the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka
O God of unchangeable power and eternal light,
look favourably on your whole church,
that wonderful and sacred mystery;
and by the peaceful operation of your providence,
carry out the work of our salvation.
Today we rejoice with the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka,
Celebrate the faithful service of two centuries.
Empower them to continue to witness
to your loving purpose in Christ Jesus,
And serve you in the land of diverse beauty and languages.
Let the whole world feel and see
that things which were cast down are being raised up,
and things which had grown old are being made new,
Open the eyes to see and eyes to hear
all things are returning to the created beauty and purpose
through him from whom they took their origin;
even through our Lord Jesus Christ.
