We are just 26 weeks away from the start of the 21st World Methodist Conference and Pre-events! The first few months of 2016 have seen a flurry of activity from the Houston Host Committee and Conference Planning team. The Houston Host Committee met on 8 February to coordinate the efforts of logistics in Houston and begin to mobilize local volunteers. Among those attending were representatives from the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, and the World Methodist Council planning team.
Later in the month of February, from the 25-26th, the World Methodist Conference Planning team met in North Carolina to tackle some of the logistical issues for the Conference. Some members of the team were not able to attend, and some joined by phone. The day-and-a-half meeting was a positive step toward making the Conference a vibrant celebration, welcoming the World Methodist family to Houston!
Keynote Speaker Highlight: Pastor Rudy Rasmus, St. John’s Church Downtown Houston (UMC)
Pastor Rudy Rasmus will be the morning worship preacher on 2 September during the World Methodist Conference. Pastor Rudy co-pastors St. John’s Church in Downtown Houston with his wife, Juanita. The couple began the congregation in 1992 with nine members, and it has since grown to a congregation of over 9,000, almost a third of whom were once homeless. St. John’s is one of the most culturally diverse congregations in the country, and people say they attend, first and foremost, because they can “feel the love.”
Pastor Rudy is the author of Love.Period and Touch: Pressing Against the Wounds of a Broken World. He is co-author of Jesus Insurgency, hosts the weekly SiriusXM show “The Love Revolution with Pastor Rudy,” and is a former monthly contributor to O Magazine’s ethics column. He also is the founder of the Bread of Life, Inc., a Houston nonprofit which ministers to thousands of hungry and homeless people each year. For several years, he has coordinated domestic and global anti-hunger initiatives in conjunction with pop superstar Beyoncé’s concert tours, and he travels extensively to develop food programs around the world.
