The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) today announced the promotion of Amos Nascimento, Ph.D., as associate general secretary for global education and new initiatives. Nascimento’s promotion is effective immediately.
In his new role, Nascimento leads the global connectional strategy for education and ministry at GBHEM. Nascimento oversees and coordinates the development of global programs and initiatives, including leading an international team working in multiple locations around the world. Nascimento’s work is in close collaboration with the general secretary’s cabinet, GBHEM’s Board of Directors’ Global Education and Ministry Committee, the Council of Bishops Task Force on Global Education, the World Methodist Council’s Education Committee, and the International Association of Methodist-related Schools, Colleges, and Universities (IAMSCU).
Prior to the promotion, Nascimento served as the special assistant to the general secretary for Global Education and New Initiatives where he supported the Global Education Fund for Leadership Development (MGEFLD), various regional associations and international committees related to GBHEM, and regional offices in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. Nascimento brings a wealth of diverse cultural experience into the position, having lived, studied, worked, and served Methodist churches and academic institutions in Argentina, Brazil, Germany, and the U.S.
“I am confident that Dr. Nascimento’s experience and years of service to our general agency have well prepared him for global leadership and service to the United Methodist Church in this new capacity,” said Dr. Kim Cape, general secretary at GBHEM. “His commitment to diversity, talent in capacity-building and management skills will help us to further our work to provide leadership development for lay and clergy around the world.”
Nascimento earned his doctorate at the University of Frankfurt in Germany. He has served on the faculty at the Goethe Universität in Frankfurt, Germany, Universidade Metodista de Piracicaba in Brazil, and the University of Washington Tacoma.
