Welcome to a journey/pilgrimage working for peace and seeking clean and abundant water in the region around the sacred River Jordan. This traveling seminar and conference is coordinated by the World Methodist Council Inter-Religious Relationships Committee and EcoPeace-Middle East and aims to promote active engagement with issues of water and peace. In this area served by the sacred river, both water and peace remain scarce and require nurtured cross-border approaches.
This journey is designed to be a pilgrimage exploring the religious significance of the River Jordan for the Abrahamic faiths. It will serve as a fact-finding mission to learn about the present state of ecological devastation of the sacred river and the eco-system that it
sustains. It will also be a spiritual exercise requiring much listening and understanding, solidarity and compassion, for those who find themselves deprived of water.
The travelling group will be welcomed by Eco-Peace and the Methodist Liaison Office in Jerusalem. Participants will:
- Cross the border from Jordan to Palestine to Israel seeking to witness how regional cooperation could deliver sufficient water supplies and, ultimately, peace and cooperation.
- Visit the Peace Island at the confluence of the Yarmouk and Jordan rivers just south of Lake Galilee.
- Be present as the World Methodist Peace Award is given to the Nassar family for their peace-building work with the Tent of Nations.
- Visit some of the historical and significant places for the faiths.
