ATLANTA, GA – It has been six months since the historic 50 Quadrennial General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church which propelled our beloved Zion into a restructuring season, which will require continued strong leadership that Bishop Darryl B. Starnes, Sr. will bring to the position of President of the Board of Bishop. The baton will be passed onto Bishop Starnes from Bishop Kenneth Monroe (current president) at the Board of Bishops meeting of February [21-25] 2017. Bishop Starnes has enjoyed an amazing and blessed ministerial career.
Born in Hampton, Virginia, but raised primarily in Knoxville, TN, the Rt. Rev. Darryl B. Starnes, Sr. entered the ministry in 1975. He holds the Bachelor of Arts Degree in History (1979) from Livingstone College, Salisbury, NC; the Master of Divinity Degree (1982) from Hood Theological Seminary, Salisbury; and the Doctor of Ministry Degree (1998) from Beeson Divinity School, Birmingham, AL.
His pastorates in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church include: Mount Moriah/Mount Ararat Circuit, Richburg, SC; Greater Warner Tabernacle, Knoxville, TN; Thompkin’s Chapel Metropolitan, Chattanooga, TN; Spottswood, New Britain, CT; Metropolitan, Birmingham, AL; Evans Metropolitan, Bennettsville, SC, and Wesley, Harrisburg, NC, where he was the organizing pastor.
He served as the Director of Evangelism for the A.M.E. Zion Church for twelve years. He has served as the Vice President of the Evangelism Program Ministries Unit of the National Council of Churches of Christ. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor at the Beeson Divinity School and at Hood Theological Seminary. He currently serves as the chairman of the Wesleyan Commission on Evangelism and the Secretary of Evangelism for the North American Section of the World Methodist Council. He was elected as the North American Officer on the Steering Committee of the World Methodist Council for the 2016-2021 quinquennium.
In 2008, he was consecrated the 96th Bishop in the line of succession. For four years he served as the Presiding Prelate of the Southwestern Delta Episcopal District, comprising the Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Mississippi, Texas, and West Tennessee-Mississippi Conferences. Since 2012, he has served as the Presiding Prelate of the Mid-West Episcopal District, comprising the Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Tennessee, and Trinidad-Tobago Conferences. He serves as Chairman of the denomination’s Church Growth and Development Board, and the Worship and Ritual Board. He is a member of the Pan Methodist Commission and the Trustee Board of Livingstone College.
Bishop Starnes is the author of several books. His most recent books include the following: Not Ashamed of the Gospel; An Evangelism Training Manuel (2009); 21st Century Christians Under Construction: A Discipleship Training Manuel (2011); and For the Perfecting of the Saint: A Handbook on Small-Group Discipleship (2013).
Sis. Camille Cullom Starnes, his wife, holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religious Studies from Livingstone College. She is a licensed minister in the AME Zion Church and serves as the Missionary Supervisor. Sis. Starnes worked for eleven years in the Department of Church School Literature of the AME Zion Church. They are the proud parents of three wonderful children: Sis. Alicia Courtney (Rev. Rodney), Millicent, and Darryl Jr. and the proud grandparents of seven adorable grandchildren: Mya, Malachi, Kaiyon, Benjamin, Caleb, Jayelle and Chloe.
